I arrived at this work through my own experience with my mother. She had an amazing life. She was alive during the Great Depression and the Second World War, raised eleven children, then went to law school in her forties. She was also a voracious reader, and a fine writer. Every time I visited, I begged her to write her memoirs. “Do it for us!” No luck. So a few years before she died, I brought my tape recorder home and my oldest sister and I sat down with her over the course of several days and got her life story on tape. I can’t tell you how grateful I am that we did. I not only learned a lot about her, but any time I feel like it, I can hear her voice and her hearty laugh.
